Known as the King of Pop a new film from Columbia Pictures smartly gives us one last look at this megastar. Just out for two weeks This is It turns out to be a fitting tribute to the music dynamo, worth taking in. Oh yes, it does help if you’re a Michael Jackson fan to appreciate this last look at a legend. Don’t go around using the term legend lightly. What makes This Is It not only special but memorable is that it’s a film about Jackson rehearsing for what was to be his comeback concert. Dozens of dates were set to debut in England until the tragic turn of events. Under the direction of Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) we’re treated to a behind the scenes look at what was going into the production from the ground floor up. Michael Lights up the Screen with Fancy Footwork and Strong VocalsLet’s be clear: this movie is all about Michael. Energy abounds in this 110 minute revelation as Jackson shows his warmth, playfulness, humanity and all the right moves to captivate believers. Here nothing arrogant surfaces about this performer as his warmth and vitality shines bright. Oh yes, he’s also a bit of a perfectionist. Highlights of this film include a bunch of Jackson standard songs along with some great set pieces juxtaposing modern technology with classic tunes. Cameras here focus on the vitality of Michael who at 50 is trim and hasn’t lost a beat. On set and on stage you get to see the gloved one having fun along with a tendency to repeat numbers and routines until their right. Fun byplay with the crew and orchestra members adds to the appeal of this musical feast. Very little focus on the past enters into this film; instead the focus is all about Michael gearing up to reappear live for what likely would have been his final hurrah.
