The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards included a surprise appearance by Kanye West, performances from Lady Gaga and Beyonce, and Taylor Swift received more than she expected.
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards did not likely disappoint anyone who tuned in hoping to see the amped-up performances, bizarre and glamorous fashion and the unpredictable, yet expected Kanye West outburst. Kanye West Invites Himself OnstageWhen Taylor Swift beat major acts like Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce to win Best Female Video, genuine surprise registered on her 18-year-old face, and when she took the stage she gave a speech expressing how much it meant to win a VMA after imagining this as a child. Before she could finish, West came onstage and took hold of the microphone from Swift and said he was happy for her, but Beyonce did one of the best music videos of all time. He then handed the mike back to a flustered Swift who stood still while booing came from the audience. Swift was ushered offstage and the show moved on to its next segment. During the rest of the show the mention of West’s name elicited a negative response, such as when P. Diddy presented with Jamie-Lynn Sigler. After saying the unpleasant-sounding name, Diddy responded to the booing with a “what did I say?” Beyonce set things right in the end by proving she’s anything but (Sasha) Fierce when while accepting the award for Video of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” she invited Swift onstage to finish her acceptance speech. Lady Gaga Stands Out With Clothing Choices and PerformanceBeyonce and Swift wore red dresses while onstage together, but a less mainstream red outfit was seen on Lady Gaga when she won the award for Best New Artist. Eminem and Tracy Morgan presented the award and Gaga began walking toward the stage clad in a lace-like gown with a headdress which covered her face in doily-like material. Gaga, never one to conform to sartorial standards, arrived earlier wearing a neck brace and with her date, Kermit the Frog. Kermit and Gaga exchanged a few on-camera kisses, but Kermit insists they are “just friends” so Miss Piggy needn’t worry. Lady Gaga and Beyonce both performed at the show held in Radio City Music Hall, Gaga doing a very histrionic and entertaining rendition of “Paparazzi” and Beyonce dancing her heart out to “Single Ladies” with a more than a dozen backup dancers. Beyonce proved once again nobody can dance in heels like she and Gaga proved no performer is as fearless as she, including a piano which she played with one leg up above the keys and some fake blood, which she spread on her body and her face. Gaga is set to tour with Kanye West beginning next month.
