The 61st Primetime Emmy awards were handed out Sunday September 20. There were repeated and first time winners throughout the evening. However, the night was full of comedy from host Neil Patrick Harris and winners acceptance speeches.
Some funny highlights from television's biggest night.
The Host
Neil Patrick Harris brought a new fresh face to the hosting duties. Harris opened the show with a sing and dance routine, called "put down the remote." It only took seven minutes before the first Kayne West joke. During the monologue Harris said, 'It's my job to make sure things run smoothly. So let's hope that Kanye West likes 30 Rock.'
Not only was Harris the host, he was also a nominee for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on How I Met Your Mother. Harris lost to Two and Half Men's Jon Cryer. And Harris wasn't shy in letting the audience know he was not pleased with his Emmy loss. At one point he interrupted Cryer in the press room for an awkward brief interview.
The doctor was in the house but not Howser. Dr. Horrible interrupted the accountants speech with his blog and the internet take over. The buffering part during the pre-recorded sketch, was great comedic timing.
The Awards
This year the awards were given out a little differently. The awards were given away in there respective categories, comedy, drama, reality and miniseries or movie. While leaving the two biggest awards, Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series until the end of the broadcast.
Jimmy Fallon's auto-tunesque introduction for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics award was awfully hilarious.
Never a dull moment when Ricky Gervais is at the microphone. This year he compared the actors in attendance average looking to the popular a-list movie actors at the Oscars or Golden Globes. With Gervais witty humour, he should host an award show.

While accepting his award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Alec Baldwin says "I'd trade my Emmy to look like him" (referring to presenter Rob Lowe).
The second Kanye West joke of the night was during Ken Howard's speech for Supporting Actor in a Movie or Miniseries. "I'll make my speech brief so it not interrupted by a congressman or a rapper."
Winning two years in a row for his role on Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston, thanked Glenn Close for being a woman during his acceptance speech.
How can the Emmy's be funny without an infamous quote from funny lady Fey? (who won an Emmy for her guest role on Saturday Night Live as Alaskan Senator Sarah Palin). While accepting the award for Outstanding Comedy Series. Fey said "I want to work with you everyday, until I put you in the ground", in regards to one of her co-workers/writer. She also thanked NBC for keeping them on the air, since their show is more expensive than a talk show.
The other big winner of the night went to the AMC show, Mad Men for Outstanding Drama Series.
